🏠 Rooftop Safety — The Most Critical Basant Risk |

Most Basant activity in Lahore takes place on rooftops (chhat). Rooftop safety is the single most important safety consideration for Basant 2027. Falls from rooftops account for serious injuries and fatalities during every Basant season.

Before You Go to the Rooftop

  • Inspect the boundary wall (mundera) — ensure it is at least 3 feet high and structurally sound
  • Check for loose tiles, broken edges or unstable flooring — repair before Basant day
  • Ensure good lighting for night kite flying sessions
  • Keep the rooftop clear of trip hazards — ropes, cables, pots, furniture
  • Create a clear marked safe zone for children away from the rooftop edge

During Rooftop Kite Flying

  • Never lean over the boundary wall to retrieve a kite or watch a competition
  • Assign one adult specifically to supervise children — not to fly kites themselves
  • Keep small children (under 5) off the rooftop entirely during competitive flying
  • Do not run on the rooftop — especially when managing kite string under tension
  • Wear shoes at all times — kite string and broken kite frames on the floor cause cuts
  • Keep a first aid kit on the rooftop
  • Limit rooftop capacity — overcrowding increases fall risk significantly

🏍️ Motorcycle Safety — Mandatory Safety Rod (2027) |

Under the Punjab Regulation of Kite Flying Ordinance 2025, motorcycle safety rods are MANDATORY on all motorcycles in Lahore during the Basant festival period. This is not optional — it is a legal requirement enforced by District Administration Lahore.

What Is a Motorcycle Safety Rod?

A motorcycle safety rod (also called a kite string guard or dor rod) is a vertical metal or plastic rod attached to the front or rear of a motorcycle that deflects kite string away from the rider's neck and throat. It is a simple, inexpensive device that has proven highly effective at preventing the most deadly Basant injuries.

Safety Rod Requirements — Basant 2027

  • All motorcycles must have a safety rod fitted before entering Lahore roads during 12–14 March 2027
  • Safety rods are available from motorcycle parts shops across Lahore for PKR 200–800
  • District Administration Lahore checkpoints will verify safety rod installation
  • Motorcycles without safety rods may be stopped and fined at checkpoints
  • Even if you are travelling by motorcycle within residential areas — the rod is required

⚠️ MOTORCYCLE SAFETY ROD IS MANDATORY

All motorcycles must have a safety rod during Basant 2027 (12–14 March). Available from motorcycle parts shops for PKR 200–800. Violation is punishable under Punjab Kite Flying Ordinance 2025.

Additional Motorcycle Safety Tips

  • Wear a full-face helmet — not just a half-helmet
  • Avoid roads passing directly under active kite-flying areas if possible
  • Reduce speed when passing through residential areas during Basant
  • Avoid using your phone while riding during Basant
  • If you see dor (kite string) across a road, slow down and pass carefully — never accelerate through it

👶 Children's Safety at Basant 2027 |

Children are among the most enthusiastic Basant participants — and also the most vulnerable. Age-appropriate safety measures are essential.

Age Guidelines

  • Under 5 years: Keep off the rooftop during active kite flying — watch from indoors or a supervised ground-level area
  • 5–10 years: Rooftop allowed with continuous adult supervision — use very light string and small kites only
  • 10–14 years: Can participate in guided kite flying with an adult nearby
  • 14+ years: Can fly independently but must be instructed on dor safety

Protecting Children from Dor Injuries

  • Never let children hold kite string without gloves
  • Use thin, light cotton dor for children — not heavy competition dor
  • Keep children away from the area where dor is being wound or unwound at speed
  • Check the dor for any sharp feel before giving it to a child — illegal sharp dor sometimes enters the market
  • Teach children the "let go" reflex — if the string cuts, release it immediately

🧤 Dor (Kite String) Safety — Handling and Injury Prevention

Even legal, approved cotton dor can cause friction burns and cuts if handled incorrectly. Proper technique significantly reduces injury risk.

How to Handle Dor Safely

  • Always wear gloves when managing kite string — thin leather or rubber gloves work best
  • Never wrap dor around your fingers or hand — use a proper Pinna or dor holder
  • Be especially careful when a kite is diving, pulling hard or when there is a pech (kite fight) — string tension spikes sharply
  • When unwinding dor from a Pinna, do it slowly and with control — do not let it spin freely
  • Never pull sharp dor across bare skin — if you see someone using sharp or chemical dor, move away

What to Do If Dor Cuts You

  • Wash the cut immediately with clean water
  • Apply pressure with a clean cloth if bleeding
  • Seek medical attention for any deep cuts — kite string cuts can be deeper than they appear
  • Report the incident to 0800-02345 if you suspect illegal sharp dor was involved

👁️ Eye Protection During Basant

Falling kites, snapped dor and kite debris pose a real risk to eyes. Sunglasses or safety eyewear are strongly recommended for anyone on a rooftop during Basant.

  • Wear UV-protective sunglasses outdoors — reduces sun glare on rooftops and protects against debris
  • Never look directly at the sun when tracking a kite — this can cause permanent eye damage
  • If kite debris hits your eye — do not rub it; flush with clean water and seek medical attention

🏙️ Public Space Safety During Basant

Road Safety

  • Be alert for kite strings across roads — especially in residential areas with active rooftop kite flying
  • Slow down when driving or riding through kite-flying zones
  • If you see a kite string stretched across a road — do not cut it yourself; call 0800-02345
  • Pedestrians: Look up as well as straight ahead in dense kite-flying areas

Power Line Safety

  • Never fly kites near power lines — this is both illegal and extremely dangerous
  • If a kite gets caught in power lines — do not try to retrieve it; leave it and call LESCO (Lahore Electric Supply Company) at 118
  • Keep kite flying areas away from electricity poles and transformers

Reporting Violations

  • Illegal sharp dor being sold: Call 0800-02345 or report at crm.punjab.gov.pk/cmccpublic
  • Charkhi being used: Call 0800-02345 immediately
  • Kite flying outside the 12–14 March window: Report to local police or 0800-02345
  • Unregistered dor vendor: Report to DC Office Lahore or 0800-02345
