🪁 What Is a Patang?

Patang is the iconic diamond-shaped kite that has defined Lahore's sky during Basant for centuries. Its distinctive shape — two triangular sections meeting at a horizontal spine — gives it excellent aerodynamic stability and manoeuvrability, making it the most popular kite for competitive kite fighting (pech or guddi-patang baazi).

The word "Patang" comes from Sanskrit and has been used in the subcontinent for kites for over a thousand years. In Lahore's kite culture, Patang is synonymous with Basant itself — the image of a diamond kite against a blue March sky is the defining visual of the festival.

🪁 What Is a Gudda?

Gudda is a rectangular kite, larger than the Patang, with a flat or slightly bowed design. Its greater surface area gives it more pull in the wind, making it the preferred kite for experienced flyers who want more power and height. The Gudda requires more skill to control but can reach higher altitudes and maintains stability in stronger winds.

Gudda — Physical Characteristics

ShapeRectangular or square — flat design with a horizontal bow
Maximum Width (2027)40 inches (1.5 Tawa) — as per Punjab Ordinance 2025
Maximum Length (2027)34 inches — as per Punjab Ordinance 2025
Frame MaterialStronger bamboo frame — heavier than Patang
Covering MaterialTissue paper or woven fabric — durable for strong winds

Flying DifficultyIntermediate to advanced — requires more string management
Best ForHigh-altitude flying, experienced competitors, strong afternoon winds
Wind Range12–35 km/h — best in moderate to strong wind
Price Range (2027 season)PKR 200–4,000 depending on size and quality

The term "Gudda" in Punjabi refers to a male doll or puppet — a nod to the kite's upright, stable posture in the wind compared to the dancing, acrobatic Patang. Gudda is less common among children and beginners but widely used in competitive circles.

🚫 Banned: Oversized Kites and the Charkhi

Two things are banned outright alongside unsafe dor. First, any kite larger than the Patang or Gudda limits. Second, the Charkhi: the wheel-shaped reel traditionally used to wind and release dor. Under the Punjab Regulation of Kite Flying Ordinance 2025, dor is legal only in Pinna (ball) form, and the Charkhi is banned for Basant 2027.

Why Are They Banned?

  • A Charkhi lets a flyer release very long lengths of dor quickly, which carries string further over roads and streets
  • Oversized kites pull harder and create more string tension, raising the risk of injury when string breaks or falls across roads
  • Limiting kite size and dor storage to the Pinna keeps kite flying at a scale the safety rules are designed for
  • Under the 2025 Ordinance, any kite exceeding Patang or Gudda size limits is classified as illegal

🚫 CHARKHI IS BANNED IN 2027

Using, selling or keeping a Charkhi, or flying an oversized kite, during Basant 2027 is an offence under the Punjab Regulation of Kite Flying Ordinance 2025. Report violations: Helpline 0800-02345 or crm.punjab.gov.pk/cmccpublic

🎨 Kite Colours and Basant Tradition

Basant is synonymous with the colour yellow — symbolising the mustard flower fields that bloom across Punjab in spring. Traditional Basant kite colours include:

  • Yellow (زرد) — the signature Basant colour; mustard, gold and saffron shades
  • Green (سبز) — representing spring and prosperity
  • Orange / Saffron (نارنجی/زعفران) — vibrant and high-visibility
  • Red (لال) — bold competitive kites
  • White (سفید) — classic, traditional, high-visibility against the blue sky
  • Multi-colour — decorative kites with patterns and motifs

There is no restriction on kite colour under the 2025 Ordinance — only size matters. Choose colours that are visible against the sky for better aerial visibility.

❓ Kite Types FAQs — Basant 2027

Q: Can I bring my own kite from home if it is larger than the allowed size?

No. The Punjab Ordinance applies to all kite-flying activity during Basant 2027, regardless of where the kite was made or purchased. Only Patang (max 35"×30") and Gudda (max 40"×34") are permitted.

Q: Are imported kites allowed at Basant 2027?

The Ordinance does not distinguish between local and imported kites — the size limits apply to all kites. However, imported kites that do not conform to local standards may be confiscated if they exceed size limits or are made of prohibited materials.

Q: What happens if my kite breaks mid-flight?

A broken kite falling to the ground is a safety concern, especially over roads. Always fly kites over open rooftop areas and not across roads or into power lines. Have spare kites ready — kite breakage is normal during competitive flying.

Q: Can children fly kites at Basant 2027?

Yes — small Patang kites are specifically designed for children. Recommended for children under 10: small Patang (20"×16", PKR 50–150). Always supervise children handling kite string (dor) to prevent cuts. See the Basant safety guide.
